Why the stain goes and the smell comes back

The mark and the odour are two different problems in two different materials, and only one of them is in the fabric.

The mark is on top. The smell is underneath

Urine does not stop at the surface. It passes through the fabric in seconds and spreads sideways in the foam, so the visible patch is the smallest part of what is actually there. A palm-sized mark on a seat cushion is routinely a plate-sized area in the foam below it.

That is why an ordinary clean is so convincing for about a week. The fabric is genuinely clean. The foam has not been touched, and the foam is where the smell lives.

Water stops working once it dries

Fresh urine is mostly water and rinses out easily. As it dries, the uric acid in it forms crystals, and those crystals are not water-soluble. You can flush the same spot repeatedly and remove the colour, the stickiness and the visible stain while leaving the crystals exactly where they are.

The crystals have no smell while they are dry. They release it when they take up moisture, which is why the sofa is fine in February and smells again the first warm wet week in spring, or the evening someone hangs washing in the room.

So the honest test of whether an odour job worked is not the day after. It is the first humid day.

Enzymes do the part water cannot

An enzyme treatment breaks the uric acid down into compounds that do rinse out. It is a different operation from cleaning, not a stronger version of it, and it has one requirement people usually skip: time. The enzyme has to stay wet on the material long enough to work, which means the treated area is damp for hours rather than minutes.

It also has to reach where the urine reached. Treating the fabric while the foam holds the crystals achieves nothing, which is the commonest reason a home enzyme spray disappoints: the right chemistry, applied to the wrong depth.

This is why we price odour treatment separately rather than folding it into the cleaning. It is more product, more dwell time and a longer visit, and quoting it as part of a normal clean would either be a lie or an overcharge for everyone without a pet.

What makes an animal do it again

Household cleaners built on ammonia smell like urine to a dog or a cat, because urine contains ammonia. Cleaning a marked spot with one is an instruction to mark it again in the same place.

Masking sprays and scented products do the same thing more slowly. The animal still reads the original signal underneath and now has a stronger reason to reinforce it.

Removing the source removes the invitation. That is the practical argument for treating it properly rather than repeatedly: it is the only version that stops the cycle.

Cats, dogs and mattresses

Cat urine is more concentrated than dog urine, so the same volume carries more of what smells and it is harder to shift. Older animals of either kind produce more of it and more often.

Mattresses are the difficult case, because the material is thick and the liquid has somewhere to go. One side is the standard job; where an animal has repeatedly used the same spot, the honest answer is sometimes that the mattress is finished. We would rather say that on the phone than take the money and half-fix it.

Sofas are more forgiving. The foam is shallower and removable cushion covers make the whole thing reachable.

What to tell us, and what it changes

Three things decide the quote. Which animal. How long ago, and whether it happened once or repeatedly in the same spot. And whether anything has been used on it already, especially anything with ammonia or a strong scent.

There is no way to see any of that in a photograph, and no way to guess it on site without asking. People sometimes leave the pet out of the message because they expect a higher price. The higher price arrives anyway, just later and with a wasted visit attached.

Common questions

Will the smell definitely go?

On a sofa, usually. On a mattress where an animal has used the same spot many times over months, sometimes not, and we say so before booking rather than after. Where the urine has reached the wooden frame it can persist regardless.

How is this different from normal upholstery cleaning?

Normal cleaning removes what is in the fabric. Odour treatment adds an enzyme stage that breaks down what dried into the foam, which needs more product and several hours of dwell time. It is quoted as a separate line.

Can I just use an enzyme spray from the pet shop?

The chemistry is right and it works on fresh, shallow accidents. On anything that soaked into foam it usually fails, because a surface spray does not reach the depth the urine reached.

How long before we can use the sofa again?

Longer than a normal clean, because the enzyme is deliberately left wet. Plan on the evening with the windows open, and do not cover it while it is damp.
