Why does a sofa smell, and when is home deodorising not enough?
The source is often below the cover, inside the padding. That is why a smell can disappear for a day and return as soon as the room becomes humid.
The visible mark and the source of the smell may be in different layers
A sofa has a fabric cover, padding and foam. A drink, urine or too much cleaning liquid can look dry on the surface while the deeper layer stays damp for days. The cover may look clean although the source remains underneath.
Budapest flats often have limited airflow, especially in winter. A faint smell in dry weather can become obvious after rain or when heating starts. That does not necessarily mean the surface is dirty. It usually means moisture has reached a layer that wiping cannot reach.
When the source is in the padding, our upholstery cleaning service in Budapest uses targeted pre-treatment and extraction to reach further than a cloth can.
Five common causes need five different responses
- Pet urine: residue can remain active in the foam after it dries. An enzyme pre-treatment is different from ordinary shampoo.
- Smoke: this is a film across the sofa, curtains and nearby surfaces, not one stain. Cleaning only the sofa may not remove the room odour.
- Milk, food or vomit: organic residue can remain below the fabric and develop a sour smell as it breaks down.
- Dampness: poor ventilation or a sofa against a cold wall can keep the back and underside damp. The moisture source must be corrected first.
- Detergent residue: repeated use of foam or washing-up liquid can leave a sticky layer that holds dirt and develops its own stale smell.
What you can safely try at home
Fragrance spray can mask an odour but cannot remove its source. Baking soda may reduce a mild surface smell, but it does not extract urine or spoiled liquid from foam. Steam can also set some stains and push moisture deeper, so it is not a universal answer.
- Check the care label and test any product on a hidden area.
- Blot a fresh spill with a clean white cloth. Do not rub it outward.
- Use as little liquid as possible and apply it to the cloth rather than soaking the sofa.
- Ventilate strongly and use a fan if available. Do not sit on or cover the fabric until it is fully dry.
- Stop if colour transfers, a water ring grows or the smell becomes stronger after wetting.
What professional extraction can and cannot do
Extraction applies a controlled amount of solution and immediately recovers it with the loosened soil. For urine, we can add enzyme treatment before extraction. The current supplement is 10,000 Ft. A straight sofa is normally 22,000 to 25,000 Ft and a corner sofa 30,000 to 35,000 Ft, confirmed from photographs.
No responsible cleaner can promise that every old odour will disappear. If liquid saturated the whole foam block, some smell can remain after more than one treatment. In severe cases the lasting repair is foam replacement by an upholsterer. We say this before the visit when the photographs and history point that way.
If the problem is specifically animal urine, read our separate guide to pet odour in sofas and mattresses.

Common questions
Why does the sofa smell again after it dries?
Moisture can reactivate residue inside the padding. Surface cleaning may remove the visible mark without reaching that deeper source.
Does baking soda remove sofa odour?
It may reduce a mild surface smell, but it cannot remove urine, food liquid or detergent trapped inside the foam.
How long does a sofa take to dry?
Usually several hours, depending on fabric, ventilation and humidity. We give a more specific estimate after seeing the sofa and the room.
Can you guarantee complete odour removal?
No. Results depend on the source, age and depth of contamination. If the foam is saturated, replacement can be more reliable than repeated cleaning.
How much does enzyme treatment cost?
It currently adds 10,000 Ft to the furniture cleaning price. We confirm whether it is appropriate from photographs and the cause of the odour.
