Why a wet vacuum is not enough for every sofa cleaning job
A home extractor can be a useful tool. It cannot identify the fabric, choose the treatment or decide when another pass risks damage. Two Budapest clients learned that difference in practice.
The short answer: the machine moves liquid, the operator makes the decisions
A washing vacuum, spray extractor or rented carpet cleaner can apply solution and recover part of it. That is useful for routine carpet maintenance, fresh water-safe spills and furniture whose care label permits wet cleaning.
The difficult part of sofa cleaning happens before and between those extraction passes. Someone still has to identify the textile, test colour stability, work out whether the mark is soil or permanent discolouration, select a suitable pre-treatment, control moisture and judge the safest stopping point. A more powerful machine does not answer any of those questions.
The cases below come from CLB Cleaning Budapest WhatsApp conversations in July and September 2026. First names are used with the clients' permission; surnames, addresses, contact details and exact locations from the private conversations have been omitted. Case one: the rented professional machine cleaned the rugs, but not the sofa stains
A Budapest client first asked us to quote a small corner sofa. She then rented what she described as a professional washing vacuum for 24 hours and cleaned the sofa and rugs herself. Three days later she returned: the sofa had dried, the marks were lighter, but they had not disappeared.
That contrast is useful. The same equipment gave her a result she liked on the rugs. On the sofa, the stains were old and of unknown origin, and the previous tenants' treatment history was unknown too. The problem was not simply a lack of suction. It was an identification and treatment problem.

The result improved, but the honest ending was not a perfect-stain promise
Our technician treated and extracted the sofa. After it dried, the client said it was in a completely different condition and praised the work. A faint residual mark later became visible on one seat. After reviewing photographs, the client and technician agreed not to repeat an aggressive treatment because further work could damage the material.
That last decision is part of professional cleaning too. Old contamination can be reduced without becoming invisible. Dye loss, fibre wear and chemical alteration are not dirt and cannot be vacuumed away. The correct result is the best safe improvement, not a guarantee made before the fabric is tested.

Case two: buying a home extractor did not remove the need for a specialist visit
A second client booked a corner sofa and four rugs, then cancelled because the family had bought a home extractor. The rugs had a history of pet accidents and the client wanted them thoroughly cleaned before a baby arrived. We suggested keeping the new machine for regular sofa care while separating the older odour problem from ordinary maintenance.
The family ultimately kept the booking for both the sofa and rugs. After seeing the amount of preparation, product choice and repeated work involved, the client described the practical difference herself.

What the machine cannot decide for you
- Whether the fabric permits water-based cleaning, solvent-only cleaning or vacuuming only
- Whether a brown edge is removable soil, a water ring, colour migration or permanent fibre damage
- Which product matches grease, protein, tannin, urine residue or an unknown old mark
- How much agitation and contact time the textile can tolerate
- How much solution can be applied without wetting the padding more deeply than it can dry
- Whether more passes will improve the result or begin to distort, fade or abrade the fabric

A safe home-machine sequence
Stop if the mark spreads, the fabric changes colour or texture, a ring forms, the recovered water remains very foamy from an earlier product, or the padding feels heavily wet. Photograph the full item, the label and the affected area before trying anything else.
- Read the furniture care label and the machine instructions. Do not assume a carpet setting is safe for upholstery.
- Vacuum dry debris first. Wetting grit makes extraction harder and can drive it into the weave.
- Test both the solution and plain water on a hidden area. Stop if colour transfers to a white cloth.
- Use a product approved for the machine and material. Do not mix products or improvise with bleach, dishwasher liquid or strong fragrance.
- Apply the minimum useful moisture, then make slow recovery-only passes without adding more solution.
- Create airflow and leave the sofa unused and uncovered until it is fully dry. Judge the result only after drying.
When renting or buying the machine still makes sense
A home extractor is not a bad purchase. It can be economical for water-safe rugs, routine maintenance and frequent fresh spills, especially when the owner is willing to learn the machine and allow proper drying time. One client in these conversations was pleased with the rugs she cleaned herself even though the sofa needed specialist treatment.
Professional help makes more sense when the stain is old or unknown, odour returns after drying, several household products have already been used, the label is missing, colour transfers in testing, or the cost of damaging the sofa is much higher than the service fee.

Common questions
Is a wet vacuum enough to clean a sofa?
Sometimes, for routine maintenance on water-safe fabric. It is not enough by itself when the stain is old, unknown, odorous or already treated with another chemical.
Why did the carpet cleaner work on my rug but not my sofa?
Rugs and sofas may use different fibres, backing and padding. A sofa stain can also sit deeper or have been altered by earlier products, so the same machine and solution can produce different results.
Can another extraction pass remove the remaining mark?
It may improve removable soil, but repeated wetting and agitation can also create rings, colour loss or texture damage. Stop when the risk becomes greater than the likely improvement.
Can professional cleaning guarantee every stain will disappear?
No responsible cleaner should guarantee every unknown old stain before testing it. Cleaning can remove contamination, but it cannot restore lost dye, worn fibres or previous chemical damage.
What should I send for an upholstery cleaning quote?
Send one full photograph, close-ups, the care label, what caused the mark if known, every product or machine already used, and your Budapest district.
